Hotels, Tents and Riads: Your Accommodations

RIADS & FUNKY COOL MEDINAS -- Masterpieces of the Morocco boutique-style hotels

As travelers looking to experience authentic Moroccan hospitality, we always stay in Riads. A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house, located within an ancient medina (walled city), which is designed around a central courtyard and/or garden. These beautiful homes have been restored to reflect time-honored Moroccan décor, yet to also provide guests with many of the modern amenities found in 4 and 5 star hotels. Some are family owned, some belonged to Royal families but all are fabulous in their own way!

As you approach a Riad from one of Morocco’s narrow, labyrinth streets in the medina, you will likely notice that each door in the grey stone and plaster walls looks fairly similar. As you pass from the bustling streets, through the nondescript exteriors and into the central courtyard/gardens of a Riad, you will be delighted by the tranquil, elegant beauty you find within.

Riads are often described by visitors as “diamonds in the rough!” The courtyard is the heart of the house and all of the rooms and stairways are connected to it. In most Riads, the courtyard is left open to the sky, which permits fresh air and sunlight to enter. Some Riad courtyards are filled with orange, lemon, or olive trees and plants of many varieties, while others may be centered on a tiered, tiled fountain surrounded by potted plants. Some of the larger Riads have small swimming pools within the courtyard space.

In addition to the spacious central courtyards and inviting shared rooms, most riads have only six-to-eight bedrooms of traditional design with en suite bathrooms. Each bedroom is a unique size and shape, with its own distinct features. Some riad rooms are positioned to open onto or overlook the central courtyard, while those situated on the higher floors may look out over the city. Some may boast access to the riad’s rooftop terrace. Moroccan riads are rather infamous for their narrow, winding staircases, which most often lead from the Riad’s courtyard and shared spaces to the bedrooms located on the higher floors. If climbing multiple flights of narrow staircases sounds problematic to you, you will want to request a ground level room. Throughout your Riad stay, you will enjoy attentive, personalized service by the Riad staff. As most Riads are quite small, the hospitality is intimate. It is not unusual for the Riad’s owner or manager to greet you upon arrival and for the staff to offer you a welcoming glass of mint tea.

TENTS -- "GLAMPING" WITH THE STARS

Each superior tent includes its own private basic-style bathroom with a western style toilet, running water, a basic shower. Dinner will be served under the stars (weather permitting). In the morning we will enjoy breakfast at the tents before we will head meet up with your 4×4 driver to return us to Erfoud.

Nestled in private sand dunes off the beaten path, this modern, white-canvas tent experience mixes modern luxury with a rural desert experience! With its white linen beds and tasteful, chic décor, this Deluxe Tent experience is the most luxurious in the region.

The private camp is located about 15 minutes south of the main Erg Chebbi sand dunes, which makes this experience feel more exclusive and protected from large tourist groups. Each deluxe tent has a simple, Western-style bathroom built from cedar wood and equipped with toilet, shower, and sink. With this experience, you will enjoy a 30-60 minute camel ride through the sand dunes to see the sunset and back 30 minutes to the luxury camp.
